Taekwondo UKM, a brief introduction

When one enters a university to study, his/her life usually changes drastically.
Gone are the days where they are under the care and protection of their parents and friends.
One has to learn how to be independent, be it looking after themselves or making decisions, big or small. All this requires one important thing, discipline. One can acquire discipline from multiple sources, such as self-discipline, through uniform societies, martial arts and so much more.

He is a bit on the fat side though

One of the best place to get it is through martial arts such as Taekwondo. In order to become an expert martial artist, one has to go through rigorous training, both physically and mentally. If one lacks discipline and chooses to stop halfway, he/she will never acquire anything. Take for example, the person in the picture beside. Do you think he would dare attempt this move, much less break it if he lacked discipline and always skip classes or never puts effort into his training?

The answer is no.

In UKM, there is a Taekwondo club of its own and most of the members are at the national level in terms of skills and abilities. The club's instructor is Master Chow, who started practicing Taekwondo at a young age. He is now a 5th-Dan black belt and is respected a lot by the members. There is also another female exponent in the club by the name Esther. She started off as a white-belt when she entered UKM, now she's a black belt and her skills can hardly be matched by other members in the club. There are still a lot of other members in the club who started off as a humble white belt but is now a force to be reckoned with in the competitions and championships. How do you think they achieved all that?

It is through hard work and discipline that they manage to achieve and become what they are today. Certainly no easy task by any means. Still, its not just all sweat and suffering in the club. The members are all very close-knitted and they look after each other. Its fun to have each other as company as they train together and it becomes a motivation to go for the next training sesion. Competitions are also one of the many exciting and fun activities that the club members join. Although winning is celebrated the most, losing isn't nesscary a bad thing either. One gets to learn from their mistake and realise that no matter how good they think they are, there is always someone who is better than them. All this motivates one to train harder!

In a nutshell, the Taekwondo club in UKM is a good choice for any students or staff in UKM. One has much to gain but nothing to lose by joining it. Classes are held every Monday and Friday night, 8.30pm in PUSANIKA, just outside the post office.
